RESTORE YOUR OUTDOOR SURFACES

Over months and years, external surfaces accumulate contamination that gradually transforms their appearance. Driveways darken with accumulated tyre marks, oil stains, and ingrained dirt until the original colour is barely visible. Patios develop green algae coatings that become hazardously slippery when wet. Walls streak with pollution, biological growth, and weathering stains. Decking becomes treacherous as algae colonise the surface texture that was designed to provide grip.

This gradual deterioration often goes unnoticed because it happens so slowly. You see your driveway every day, so the incremental darkening passes beneath conscious awareness. It is only when you compare current appearance to photographs from years ago, or when you see the dramatic difference cleaning makes, that you realise how much transformation has occurred.

JB Contractors's professional power washing services reverse this deterioration, restoring surfaces to their original appearance across Plymouth, St Austell, Bodmin, and throughout Cornwall. Our commercial-grade equipment delivers significantly higher pressure and water flow than domestic machines, enabling thorough cleaning that consumer equipment simply cannot achieve. More importantly, our operators understand which surfaces can handle aggressive treatment and which require gentler approaches to avoid damage.

Professional pressure washing differs from DIY efforts in several important ways. Our equipment generates pressures that penetrate deep into porous surfaces, dislodging contamination that has worked its way into the substrate over years. We use appropriate detergents for different types of contamination, breaking down oil stains, killing biological growth, and lifting ingrained dirt more effectively than water pressure alone. We understand surface limitations and adjust techniques accordingly, avoiding the damage that inexperienced operators often cause to pointing, delicate stonework, or wooden surfaces.

Power washing also provides the essential first step before other treatments. Surfaces must be thoroughly clean before painting for proper adhesion. Weather shielding treatments require clean substrates to penetrate effectively. Render repairs bond properly only to clean surfaces. By combining power washing with these follow-up treatments, you achieve results that last far longer than either service alone.

SURFACES WE RESTORE

🚗 Driveways

Block paving, concrete, tarmac, gravel with membrane, and resin-bound surfaces all accumulate contamination over time. Oil stains from vehicles, tyre marks, weed growth between joints, moss, algae, and general dirt combine to dramatically alter appearance. Professional cleaning restores that just-laid look, making your driveway a feature rather than an eyesore. We can also apply sealing treatments after cleaning to protect against future staining and make ongoing maintenance easier. Popular service throughout Saltash, Torpoint, Liskeard, and surrounding areas.

🪨 Patios & Paths

Natural stone, concrete paving slabs, brick pavers, and porcelain tiles all see heavy contamination from foot traffic, fallen leaves, barbecue residue, and biological growth. The combination of shade, moisture, and organic matter creates perfect conditions for algae and moss. Our cleaning restores both appearance and safety by removing slippery growth. Serving Truro, Falmouth, Penryn, and beyond.

🪵 Decking

Timber decking presents particular challenges. The textured surface that provides grip when new becomes colonised by algae, turning genuinely dangerous when wet. Deck cleaning requires careful technique to remove growth without damaging wood fibres or driving water deep into the timber. We can also apply preservative treatments after cleaning to protect against rot and UV damage while retarding regrowth. Essential maintenance for homes in Newquay and coastal areas where maritime humidity promotes rapid biological growth.

🏠 Walls & Render

External walls accumulate pollution, biological growth, and weathering stains that significantly affect property appearance. Cleaning before painting is essential for proper adhesion, but many walls benefit from cleaning alone without the need for repainting. We use appropriate pressures and techniques for different wall constructions, from robust concrete block to delicate lime render on historic properties. Serving Camborne, Redruth, Hayle, and all Cornwall.

🏗️ Roofs & Gutters

Moss and lichen growth on roofs damages materials and blocks water drainage. Our roof cleaning service removes biological growth safely and applies biocide treatment to retard regrowth. We also clean gutters, removing accumulated debris that causes blockages and overflows, and clean uPVC fascias New Roof Installation that have discoloured over time.

🏢 Commercial Properties

Business premises benefit from professional appearance. Clean entrances, car parks, and external areas create positive impressions for customers and visitors. We work outside business hours where required and can establish regular maintenance schedules to keep commercial properties looking their best throughout the year.

WHAT DOES POWER WASHING COST?

Power washing is priced either by the square metre or by the day, depending on the job. Published UK averages give a reasonable starting point for budgeting.

WorkTypical UK costNotes
Pressure washing, per m²£8.50 – £15.50varies with surface and how bad it is
Small drivewayaround £250typically 4 – 5 hours
Medium drivewayaround £350typically 6 – 7 hours
Large drivewayaround £400typically 7 – 8 hours
Patio cleaning£195 – £450around £300 on average
Sealing after cleaning£5 – £17 per m²optional, extends the result
Clean and seal combinedaround £24 per m²around £700 for a medium driveway
Day rate£150 – £250for larger or awkward jobs

Where these figures come from. Figures are published UK industry averages from Checkatrade’s cost guides, reviewed August 2026. They are national ranges for guidance only — not a quotation from JB Contractors, and not specific to the South West. Every property differs. The only accurate number is the one on a written quote after we have seen the job.

What pushes the price up

Years of accumulated moss and algae, block paving needing re-sanding afterwards, delicate or old surfaces requiring a soft-wash rather than high pressure, and no water supply on site.

What brings it down

Regular maintenance rather than a decade of neglect, straightforward concrete or tarmac, and combining a driveway with a patio in the same visit.

The Cornwall factor

A damp, mild, maritime climate is close to perfect for algae and moss. Cornish properties green up faster than the national picture assumes, and north-facing surfaces that never see direct sun need doing more often than a standard guide suggests.

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Will pressure washing damage my surfaces?

It can, in the wrong hands and at the wrong pressure. Old or soft stone, lime mortar, aged block paving and some render will all be damaged by a high-pressure lance. That is why we soft-wash where soft-washing is appropriate — lower pressure with a treatment that kills organic growth at the root. Matching the method to the surface matters more than the size of the machine.

How often should I have it done?

In Cornwall, more often than national guides suggest. The mild, damp maritime climate is close to ideal for algae and moss. Most driveways and patios benefit from a clean every two to three years; north-facing surfaces that never get direct sun can need it annually. Regular cleaning is also considerably cheaper than a decade of build-up.

Do you re-sand block paving afterwards?

Yes, where it is needed. Pressure washing removes the kiln-dried sand from the joints, and leaving it out means the blocks work loose and weeds return quickly. Anyone who cleans block paving and walks away without re-sanding has left the job half done.

Is sealing worth the extra?

Sometimes. Sealing helps a cleaned surface stay clean, resists oil staining and stabilises the joints, and it roughly doubles the cost. On a driveway you have just paid to clean properly it usually pays back. On a surface you are planning to replace in a couple of years, it does not.

Do you need to use my water and electricity?

We carry our own water where access is difficult, but an outside tap makes the job faster and cheaper for larger areas. We will confirm what we need when we quote so there are no awkward surprises on the day.

Can you clean render and walls, not just driveways?

Yes, and this is where the soft-wash approach really matters. Blasting render with high pressure drives water into the wall and can strip the finish. Render and painted walls get a low-pressure treatment that removes growth without damaging the surface underneath.

Will the green come back?

Eventually, yes — this is Cornwall. A treatment that kills the growth at the root rather than just blasting the surface keeps it away substantially longer, and sealing extends it further. Anyone promising it will never return is not being straight with you.
