What actually is weather shielding?

A protective coating applied to external walls that repels driving rain while still letting the wall breathe out moisture from inside. That breathability is the whole point — a coating that seals a wall completely traps damp in the structure and causes exactly the problem it was meant to prevent. It is not the same thing as masonry paint, and it should not be priced like it.

How is it different from just painting?

Masonry paint is a decorative film that also offers some protection. A weather-shielding system is a protective treatment that also happens to look good. The coatings are thicker, more flexible, bridge hairline cracks, and carry manufacturer guarantees of ten to twenty years rather than the five to eight you would expect from paint.

Do I actually need it?

Often, no. On a sheltered inland property, good masonry paint is the sensible choice and we will tell you so. Weather shielding earns its cost on exposed elevations — west-facing walls taking the weather straight off the Atlantic, coastal properties with salt in the air, solid-wall construction with no cavity, and any wall where damp is already coming through.

How long does it last?

Façade coating systems typically carry a ten-year manufacturer guarantee; penetrating masonry crèmes can be guaranteed up to twenty. Guarantees depend on the surface being properly prepared and the system being applied by an approved installer, so the paperwork is only as good as the preparation underneath it.

Will it stop damp coming through my wall?

If the damp is penetrating damp — rain driving through a solid wall — then usually yes, that is exactly what it is for. If it is rising damp from the ground or condensation from inside, a wall coating will not touch it, and applying one is money wasted. Diagnosing which you have comes first.

Can it be applied to any wall?

Most masonry, render and pebbledash. It cannot go onto a wall that is structurally failing or holding significant moisture — those need putting right first. Some period and listed buildings should not be coated at all, and we will tell you if yours is one.

Does it come in colours?

Yes, a wide range. Bear in mind that a coating meant to last twenty years is a longer commitment to a colour than paint is, so it is worth seeing a sample on your own wall in daylight rather than choosing from a card indoors.
